In 2020 Dr. Jason M. Newell became a certified substance abuse therapist, or therapist in recovery. This is after a two-year odyssey through twelve clinics and many years of working with addicts and alcoholics on the North Carolina coast. He currently practices as a psychotherapist with clients who have addictions to drugs and/or alcoholism. Here is an overview of what led up to his decision to become a substance abuse therapist.

He had worked in the medical field for fifteen years, when he began his addiction to alcohol and drugs. While doing some consulting work for the Department of Social Services in rural Appalachia, he met and developed a close personal relationship with a young lady who was severely addicted to crack cocaine. It was during this time that he began to suffer from a substance abuse problem and kicked the habit cold turkey. The experience made him very aware of the negative stigma attached to addiction. After leaving the social services department he decided to pursue a psychology degree and became a licensed therapist.

Since then, he has been very successful in treating substance abuse cases in both private and public sector settings. His approach towards treating patients is one that is very similar to the methods used by many psychiatrists, but unlike most psychotherapists he doesn’t believe in using drug therapies such as alcohol or ecstasy in treating patients. Instead, he prefers to work with his clients through cognitive behavioral therapy, which helps them learn how to change their thoughts and behaviors towards substance abuse.
