A therapist must have a wide range of abilities in order to help individuals with substance abuse issues. Generally, they need to be licensed as a psychologist and also licensed or registered with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). In order to become a certified or registered therapist, a bachelor’s degree is generally required along with years of experience. Some addiction counselors are also licensed or registered psychiatrists, while many others are not. The process of becoming a licensed or registered therapist varies from state to state but typically requires at least a master’s degree and years of experience.
For individuals who don’t know where to begin when looking for a substance abuse therapist, the first place to look is the local phone book. Many local hospitals or substance abuse treatment centers will list a therapist or counselor’s position in their facilities. If you are unable to locate a local therapist or counselor, the next best place to check is the Internet. There are many online websites that allow you to search for a therapist or counselor that is located near you. If you find someone that you think may be able to help you with your addiction problem, you should set up an initial consultation by making an appointment to meet and speak with them face-to-face. During your first meeting, you can get a feel for how well the therapist responds to people and their problems and this can be extremely helpful as you progress through your therapy.
Another way to locate a substance abuse therapist in your area is by contacting the American Counseling Association and requesting a referral. Although many counselors offer a free initial meeting, there are others that require a referral in order to receive a recommendation. The reason that some counselors don’t need referrals is because they are especially good at helping those who come to them and are more likely to continue to seek therapy after receiving their initial treatment. Substance abuse counselors who do not require referrals are usually overworked and are very busy. If you know someone that needs help with their substance use problem, please keep in mind that it’s best to start with a counselor that will refer you for further assistance.
