Brenda C Chynoweth, a former drug addict and alcoholic was convicted for possession of cocaine and served 6 years in state and federal prisons. She has also been a guest speaker at the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, contributing articles to their drug addiction media campaign. In her speech, she described her experiences as a drug addict and alcohol addict and called on all Americans to support the victims of these life-threatening addictions. Recently, she has been a guest speaker at the Southwestern Association of Colleges and Schools Annual Conference on Drug Education and Treatment.

What motivates someone like Brenda C Chynoweth to become a drug and alcohol counselor? Her answer is personal – her son was murdered in the street by drug dealers, and her daughter’s addiction to prescription medications is threatening her health. As a professional counselor, she sees patients grappling with addictions, trying to work through them, and getting clean. Her goal is to help people overcome addictions so that they can lead productive, fruitful lives. She believes that addiction can be defeated if the right circumstances are met; if people have the right assistance; if they accept help; and if they follow-through on their recovery. This book shares some of her professional experiences in discussing the causes of substance abuse and its relationship to society, the individual and his or her ability to control substance abuse, and how we can address this problem.

Although many therapists believe that drug and alcohol addictions are a disease, it must be clearly understood that they are treatable. They are not something that will just go away by itself. With the right combination of therapy, education, and resources, substance abuse and addiction can be defeated. This book shares some of the stories of people who have overcome substance abuse and are leading successful lives today.
